The recent amendments to the DUCSU (Dhaka University Central Students' Union) constitution have not changed the position of the Vice-Chancellor, but have brought some balance to the power of the President. From now on, the Vice-Chancellor will have to seek the approval of the Syndicate before implementing decisions, and there is an option to take action in the courts against the President's decisions.
However, there is still disagreement over the demand for an elected student representative president. While Chhatra Shibir and Democratic Student Parliament see this amendment as positive, Chhatra Dal believes that this reform will not ensure real representation of students. They say that the environment for elections has not yet been created and there may be influence from certain forces before the elections.
Since DUCSU became ineffective after 2019, the interests of students were ignored in the university's decision-making process. The demand for elections has been rising for a long time from student organizations. The administration said that the draft constitution has been finalized based on the proposals of the student organizations, but the demand to have an elected representative of the students instead of the vice-chancellor has not been met.
After the constitution and code of conduct are finalized by the syndicate by April, the election process can begin with the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner. The university administration said that they will continue discussions with student organizations to create an environment for fair elections.
