In a press briefing held at the Foreign Service Academy on Sunday (April 6), Bangladesh's Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus announced sending a letter to US President Donald Trump. Through this, the Chief Advisor will try to protect Bangladesh's trade interests as well as increase the country's exports.
In the press briefing, the Chief Advisor's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said that two letters will be sent within the next 48 hours - one to the US President and the other to the US Trade Representative. This initiative will create opportunities for increasing Bangladesh's trade and exports.
In addition, Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) Executive Chairman Chowdhury Ashiq Mahmud Bin Harun considered Trump's new tariff policy as positive and commented on the possibility of creating a better investment environment in the future. He said, "This year, a new vision for investment in Bangladesh will be presented and what the country's commercial picture will be like in 10 years."
Meanwhile, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) is preparing a possible list of goods imported from the United States for duty exemption. The NBR is selecting the goods so that even if the import increases due to the duty reduction, there will be no major impact on revenue.
Meanwhile, in a meeting held at the Ministry of Commerce, NBR officials said that about 30 goods from the United States have duty rates ranging from 26.2% to 80%. However, the average duty rate is less than 5%.
Currently, Bangladesh's major imported goods include cotton, scrap, Boeing aircraft parts and capital equipment, which already enjoy duty-free benefits.
