Dr. Muhammad Yunus became emotional at the opening ceremony of the investment conference held at the Hotel Intercontinental in Dhaka on Wednesday (April 9). He cried while mentioning the beginning of independence through the liberation war in 1971 and the famine of 1974.

He said, “In 1974, 1.5 million people died of hunger. Our people were farmers, but many of them did not have land. Life was very difficult.”

Dr. Yunus also said, “Today we are discussing big industries, foreign companies want to invest here. This is an extraordinary journey.”

He said, “The microcredit program was started during the famine so that poor people, especially women, could start their own businesses. It became popular worldwide.”

The head of government told investors, “Wherever you are, that difficult time of 1974 is a small memory within you. The solution is not in helping the poor financially, but in building infrastructure and harnessing human power.”
