The government amended the Jamuka Act on the night of June 3 and issued a new ordinance, recognizing only those who directly participated in the war as 'heroic freedom fighters'.
As a result, more than 400 MNAs and MPAs, including Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmed, who won the 1970 election, will now be considered 'associates of the liberation war', not 'heroic freedom fighters'.
The new definition states that only those who fought inside the country from March 26 to December 16, 1971 or participated in the frontal war after receiving training in Indian training camps will be considered heroic freedom fighters. Members of the armed forces, EPR, police, Mukti Bahini, naval commandos, Kilo Force and Ansar are also included.
In addition, the persecuted heroines of the occupying forces and doctors, nurses and medical assistants of field hospitals will also be recognized as 'heroic freedom fighters'.
On the other hand, politicians, journalists, artists, foreign embassy workers and professionals who played a role in the Liberation War at home and abroad will now be considered 'associates of the Liberation War'.
According to sources from the Liberation War Ministry, although a draft of the political decision was initially approved, it was later revised and given its final form.
