In a statement on the occasion of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers on Thursday (May 29), the European Union (EU) in Dhaka highly praised Bangladeshi peacekeepers. The message said, "We recognize their efforts to stop conflicts and save lives. The EU has an unwavering commitment to the United Nations and international law. Bangladeshi peacekeepers not only keep the world safe, but also contribute to the prosperity of the country."
According to UN data, since 1988, Bangladesh has participated in 63 peacekeeping missions in about 43 countries or regions. So far, 2558 members of the armed forces have been deployed in these missions. Currently, 5,818 Bangladeshi peacekeepers are serving in 10 countries, of which 444 are women.
According to the Armed Forces Division (AFD), 144 members of the Bangladesh Armed Forces have sacrificed their lives so far while participating in peacekeeping operations, of whom 141 are from the army.
This year's theme for Peacekeeping Day is **'The Future of Peacekeeping'**, which highlights the new challenges and adaptation of peacekeeping missions in a complex and rapidly changing world.
The United Nations is working to modernize and adapt peacekeeping operations to meet these challenges.
The Bangladesh government has taken up various programs to mark the day. The morning will begin with an event to commemorate peacekeepers. The 'Peacekeeping Run/Rally-2025' will be inaugurated by Home Affairs Advisor Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury. Later, a special program will be held at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center to honor injured peacekeepers and discuss the UN mission. Finance Advisor Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed will be present as the chief guest.
The program will be attended by members of the Advisory Board, ambassadors of various countries, UN Resident Coordinators, heads of the three services, Inspector General of Police, officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and media personalities.
On this occasion, Principal Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus said in a message, "Bangladesh believes in a culture of peace, tolerance and humanity. Our participation in peacekeeping operations is a reflection of our commitment to peace and stability in the world. I am hopeful that our peacekeepers will continue to brighten the country's reputation through their courage, sacrifice and professional skills in the future as well."
