A press release sent by the Fire Service on Saturday (March 29) said that after two strong earthquakes in Myanmar and Thailand, a similar danger could occur in Bangladesh.
Two powerful earthquakes struck different parts of Myanmar and Thailand on Friday (March 28). The two earthquakes measured 7.7 and 6.4 on the Richter scale, respectively. This has resulted in extensive damage in both countries. In Bangladesh, there is a possibility of earthquakes in the Chittagong, Sylhet, Mymensingh and Dhaka regions, which has increased the risk of danger.
In this situation, the Department of Fire Service and Civil Defense has urged all citizens to take the following preparations to deal with the earthquake and minimize the level of damage:
1. Construction of earthquake-resistant buildings according to the Bangladesh National Building Code 2020.
2. Renovation and strengthening of risky and old buildings.
3. Strengthening fire prevention systems in multi-storey and commercial buildings.
4. Ensuring the correctness of utility services including gas, water, electricity.
5. Regularly conduct drills and raise awareness about what to do during an earthquake.
6. Keep emergency telephone numbers (fire service, ambulance, police, hospital) in all places and write them in visible places.
7. Provide volunteer training for disaster response activities.
8. Store emergency equipment such as flashlights, radios, whistles, hammers, dry food, clean water, first aid kits, etc.
9. Cooperate with the supervisory agency in all activities.
The Fire Service and Civil Defense Department has already launched various activities. Everyone has been urged to come together and be aware of earthquakes and other disasters and to prepare to reduce the level of damage.
