Bangladesh's Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus met with Chinese Minister of Water Resources Li Guoying at the State Guest House in Beijing, China today. At that time, he sought the Chinese government's assistance in developing a 50-year master plan to learn from China's experience in water crisis and management in Bangladesh.

Professor Yunus highly praised China's achievements in water and flood management, saying, "China has shown amazing success in solving water problems. "He told the Chinese minister, "The problems you have are the same problems we have. If you share your experiences with us, we will be happy."

Regarding Bangladesh's water crisis and river management, Professor Yunus said, "Bangladesh is a delta region, surrounded by hundreds of rivers. "Water gives us life, but sometimes it becomes our enemy. As the population increases, there is a risk of rivers being damaged and the environment being damaged."

He called for sharing Chinese President Xi Jinping's water management strategy. He highlighted the need for technical assistance and expert advice from China to improve Bangladesh's water management system.

China's Minister of Water Resources Li Guoying acknowledged the challenges of water management in Bangladesh and said, "China and Bangladesh are facing similar water management problems. "This has made the country's water management more complex," he said, noting that 85 percent of Bangladesh's population lives in flood-prone areas.

Professor Yunus also mentioned the need for assistance in Teesta River management and cleaning up polluted water around Dhaka. The Chinese Minister of Water Resources assured of providing technical assistance and advice to Bangladesh to address its water crisis.

Principal Advisor Professor Yunus is currently on a four-day visit to China and is meeting with Chinese leaders and investors to seek to enhance mutual cooperation.
